Axe Hill Winery

Axe Hill is not just a farm with a winery; it is an experience. Step into our cellar and prepare to uncover a place of stillness. Discover something rare, something real. Beyond the crowds. Raise your glass and discover yourself standing on solid ground.

Welcome to
our stillness

In the heart of the Klein Karoo where the sun beats down on rugged mountains and dry plains, where the air carries the scent of wild fynbos, you’ll find Axe Hill—a boutique winery rooted in time, tradition and an unwavering passion for winemaking. No place of mass production or high-tech intervention, instead a place where nature, patience and human hands shape every bottle.

Planted more than 30 years ago, our vineyard is home to Portuguese varieties that thrive in the raw beauty of Calitzdorp’s arid landscape. Our vines, gnarled and wise, have learned to survive and flourish in this extreme yet breath-taking environment. Drawing deep from the ancient soils, we seek to grow wines that tell a story of resilience, character, and of extraordinary palate.

At Axe Hill, we believe in working slowly and gently, allowing time and nature to do their part. We grow our wines from small parcels of grapes using age old techniques and enduring care. Every step, from harvest to bottle is done with intent—by loving hands that know the vines, understand the land and respect for time. Perhaps artisan winemaking at its purest.

When you visit our cellar, you won’t just taste our wine—you’ll taste this place. The red earth beneath your feet, the crisp Klein Karoo air, the quiet strength of the land— poured into each glass. Our wines are different; a product of our slow, mindful, and deep connection to this place.

WINE TASTING

At Axe Hill, every bottle tells a story, every sip takes you on a journey through time, tradition, and the rugged beauty of the Klein Karoo. Our wine tastings are as intimate as our process—personally conducted by the winemaker in the heart of the cellar. Although we are open most days, personal tastings are best arranged by appointment. Book in advance and we will spoil you with an original tapas from our farm kitchen to complement the experience.
